2009 Fixtures Discussion Benelux

Wed Nov 26, 2008 2:49 pm by Webmaster

As the ECB convention is rapidly approaching and there is decisions to be made, Den Haag GAA have decided to pass a motion that would restructure how the Benelux stage of the european championship works. We are happy with how the pan european tournaments currently work but we think that the Benelux could be run in a different way given the nature and size of the region.

The motion is as follows.
The Benelux phase of the European championship to be run as a home and away format as opposed to the current one day tournament. Each team will play each other twice, once at each others home pitch and games will be 60 minutes long, hence removing the tournament format. The winners of the Benelux tournament will be those with the highest points standing over the period set out.

This will cut down costs down emensily and given all teams are within driving distance of each other teams can easily travel up and down to the various locations in a day. This means that teams can then concentrate on the pan european rounds leaving the large travel distances and hotel hopping until then.

Also during the convention we will be urging for the hurling chapionship to be pushed through during this first half of the season. Given people from all clubs in the benelux are involved in the hurling championship this makes sense and helps to space out the travelling, costs and strain on players bodies.

A very similar proposal was suggested earier this year and we have sought precedent in this in how things can work. Wel feel that over the course of the year this will vastly suit all of the benelux teams.

I would like to get your opinion on this as we want to make sure everyone is happy with this idea and that we will hopefully have your support on this. I will be submitting the proposal to Tony Bass and Eileen Jennings before i leave work this evening so if you can reply as soon as possible it would be greatly appreciated. If you want you should be able to get me on my mobile all day.

Apologies for the lateness of this but we have only just had our AGM and decided to proceed with this proposal.

Many thanks
