Wed Apr 29, 2009 11:43 am by Webmaster 125th anniversary of one of the world's largest voluntary sports organisations to be celebrated across the continent. In what is building up to be the best year ever for gaelic games in Europe, almost 30 clubs will contest football, hurling, camogie and ladies football leagues, and championships, in seven diverse locations across the continent in the coming weeks. European Board chairperson Eileen Jennings said she "was looking forward to welcoming new clubs and an expanding number of new players to the European gaelic games family". Irish expatriates will be joined by growing numbers of native players in showcasing gaelic games in locations from Spain to Sweden and from the Channel islands to Hungary over the coming three weekends. Jennings added "I invite both fans and those wishing to see the world's most exciting field games to come out and enjoy the games and share in the 125th anniversary celebrations" Tournaments are as follows: May 2 European men's and ladies football champions for the past three years will compete in this coming Saturday's first round of the European ladies football Championships and the second round of the Benelux Regional football league in The Hague (Netherlands). (see attached additional press release) The first ever round of the Scandinavian regional football league takes place in Gothenburg, Sweden. New clubs from the host city, Malmo and Oslo will join Copenhagen for the inaugural event. The north-west regional (men's) football league continues with a round in Jersey, Channel Islands where the home club are hosting a round for the first time. May 9 The Iberian men's and ladies football championship hots up with the third round being hosted by Sant Vincent club in Valencia, Spain on Saturday week. The eastern Europe regional football league second round will be hosted by the Budapest Rangers club in Hungary on the same day. May 16 The European Hurling and Camogie Championships will continue in Luxembourg, where competition is expected to move up a gear after the first round last month in Paris. Over in France, the Breton football league, featuring local teams composed almost entirely of indigenous players will arrive in Liffre, Brittany (North-west France) for it's finale. In all it is expected that over 1.000 players, both male and female, from nearly thirty clubs will participate in day long tournaments with cultural and social events to celebrate the GAA's 125th anniversary being organised in conjunction with many of the tournaments.
